Take #40: The Mummy

Image result for the mummy images 2017"The Mummy" is likely to have you yelling for yours, particularly if you watch it at Imax, whose sound systems makes the effects quite convincing.

Don't expect the engaging story-line and wry humour of the earlier series - this is dark and pretty macabre stuff, with some interesting special effects. Russell Crowe's Dr. Jekyll act, however, left me completely bewildered; but then, I think I made the mistake of trying to understand what was happening.

If you're a fan of Tom Cruise (who really should stick to the MI franchise), or of Sofia "Kingsman" Boutella (who makes a lissom if exceptionally blanched mummy, although she doesn't have too much to do), you might like to see this movie. If not, I recommend you stay away.

Take #39: Wonder Woman

Wonder Woman: What a "Gal" !

If you like super-hero films, this one is terrific.

Gal Gadot, the Israeli actress / model / martial artist absolutely nails it as the fiery, naive Amazon who steps into the "world of men" for the first time; it is difficult to think of another actress who would have done equal justice to the role. Chris Pine is pretty neat as the British military spy bemused by the sudden presence of a beautiful, bellicose partner.

The story line is, of course, slightly over the top, but you can forgive that because the movie is fast-paced and slickly edited; a liberal dose of humour in the dialogue also contributes to making it a great watch.

Wonder Woman 2 is almost a certainty - I haven't seen a hall this packed for a super-hero film (at a mid-week night show!) in a very long time. Girl power: go get it !

Take #38: Raees

If you don't see this one, you won't miss much.

With due respect to SRK, this is not going to be a significant milestone in an otherwise memorable filmography. The exceptional aspects of the movie include Nawazuddin's portrayal of a relentless cop; the cinematography; and Mahirah's nose.

Judging by the size of the holiday crowd, this one may well be a hit; but you might agree, after seeing it, that it is clearly a miss as well.
